Default Incision Complications?

Hi There!

Here is my story and post op symptoms. If someone could please provide advice it would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have a emergency laproscopic appendectomy on November 8, 2008. I was released from the hospital on the 10th and told that on the 16th I could remove the steri strips from my 3 incisions. I have one incision through my belly button, one directly below it and one directly above it. However, on the 15th I noticed an odd yellow discharge from my belly button discharge. I called my family doctor and was instructed to come in the following day. She removed the steri strips from the bottom incision and it is healing very nicely. She removed the strips from teh top incision and there was some bruising but it also was healing quite nicely. When she removed the strips from the belly button incision it was a different story. It was bleeding and leaking quite a bit. She cleaned the area up and did a swab of the discharge. She then wrote me a prescription for Cephalex for the next 7 days.

Now I followed up with her this past Friday, the 21st. My middle incision was still leaking and I only had one days worth of prescription left. She said the swab came back and there was a scant staph infection found and that the Cephalex was resistant to it. She has prescribed me yet another antibiotic; now Ciprofloxacin.

I am starting to get concerned. I have been on the new antibiotic for 2 days and there is still a bright yellow and somtimes orange discharge. It just pours out of my incision whenever there is even the slightest pressure applied on my stomach. She has asked me to now follow up with the surgeon because of some internal problem that might exisit; allow she didn't specify what that might be.

Has anyone had any symptoms or a similar problem? Any advice on what I should do? It's been over two weeks since my surgery and my belly button incision does not appear to be healing. The incision to me appears to be a bit swollen. Not hot or any red streaks around the incison. There are a few spots along the incision that are blistery and red though. Not only this but the incision is quite painful, I'm quite nauseau and it's still leaking a ton. I have had laproscopic surgery before and have never had a problem like this.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreicated!

Thanks!

C

Default Yellow discharge normal

I'm 16 days after lap appie + a belly button hernia. The surgical nurse told me that a "straw coloured" discharge is perfectly normal. Even if it is a bit pinkish, it's no big deal. It's just some red blood cells being washed out of the wounds. It does not indicate infection. It's the same fluid you get in a badly skinned knee. With an infection you'd get whitish or greenish pus and a rotten odor. What my doctor recommended was keeping the wound open to the air, and pouring hydrogen peroxide into the belly button twice a day. It has significantly reduced the weeping of the yellow/pinkish discharge and healed the wound. 3 days after trying that, it doesn't weep much anymore and the incision formed a scab which has since come off, so its getting better.
