Folks
I am trying to find out about what a grumbling appendix is, I may have one. Looking through the 334 archive posts, mostly scary ones, I didn't see anything on a grumbling appendix. Nor searching the net offered any information, plenty of hits, just nothing meaningful. I have had this pain in the side now, nearly every day for the last five years, a throbbing pain, I cannot sit upright, its like I have been punched. The doctors are clueless (and useless), had the tests, scans, and no doctor has ever mentioned my appendix. Last week I spoke with my brother, who lives overseas, so usually when we talk we don't discuss our medical conditions, however on this occassion I did ask. Ian has had a burst appendix but explained that he had pains in his side previously for years, sometimes had excruciating pains, found that sugary based foods aggravated the condition and passing wind helped relieve the discomfort. Ian was told he had had a grumbling appendix, (after years of misdiagnosis). Ian's symptoms are the same as what I now have, yet I cannot find anything on the net, it seems 'on some things' medical science is still in the dark ages. From what I read about peoples experiences here, I will be going back to my doctor and saying what about my "grumbling ?" Appendix. any info, please... Thanks Brian PS, seems we are also both hypoglycemic. The doctors couldn't figure that out either. |

Grumbling appendix is just another term for Chronic or Sub-Acute Appendicitis.
Some info here: http://groups.msn.com/Appendectomy/links.msnw but likely you've seen many posts about the same thing in the archive. Good luck. |

i think i have chronic appendicitis.
this is my story dece 25th 2007. (this is an estimate as i have had these pains for a long time but its been predominate since christmas day). Anyways, Ive had this pain that started out feeling like a golf ball near my right ovary. I thought whatever- its endometriosis. I was scheduled for a laprascope on jan 2 2008, to see if i had endo. I did but very small. None of it was near this pain . I did have a cyst on my right ovary. it was removed. it was small. BUT... during the surgery my surgeon noticed my appendix is hard, straight and inflamed. He decided i should see a surgeon to have it removed. more on that in a second. I have had this pain on my right side, mostly every day since christmas. Every once in a while its a sharp stabbing pain- but it goes away. A few weeks ago- sometime in february. I think i did damage. I was carrying a laundry basket and it pushed on the area where the pain is and ohh did it hurt for a few days. I was like yep shouldnt have done that. Last week I was bending over to put a bowl on the floor for the cats and again this same pain. except this time it was more intense , and was stronger for the few days it lasted. Sometimes my rib hurts on that side, but not very often. Monday night my belly button hurt. Tylenol1,2 or 3's ,naproxen, ibuprofen, oxycoten (SP??) doesnt work. heat doesnt work. My surgery date has been set for may 22nd 2008. or maybe thats the doctor consultation. I dont know. No one wants to tell me whats going on. I have cystic fibrosis, and diabetes and am trying to get pregnant. But i dont want my appendix to rupture or have to get surgery if Im pregnant. I dont want it to rupture at all bc of my overall health issues (CF/diabetes). what can I do for pain? What can I do in the meantime?? Help!! |

That sounds like the same thing that happened to me. I would ask for a CT scan. We didn't know what was wrong and after the most intense pain I have ever felt in my entire life for over 2months I went to the Doc. for the second time. I was lucky and I had a Doc who was determined to find out what was wring with me. I had formed an abscess that was leaking very slowly that night they sent me to surgery. If I were you I would get the CT scan.

can ct scans not be seeing the real picture? I am at my wits end after 8 days of mild to severe right side pain in the appendix area. sent home after the gamut of tests and two ct scans in a week, both showing nothing, yet here i sit with the same right side pain and many of the other symptoms. At what point, if ever, will they elect to remove the thing no matter what the ct scans say?
Grumbling appendix is just another term for Chronic or Sub-Acute Appendicitis.
Some info here: http://groups.msn.com/Appendectomy/links.msnw but likely you've seen many posts about the same thing in the archive. Good luck.
I've been having appendicitis like symptoms on and off for more than a month now. Two trips to the e.r. and all the tests showed no appendicitis. Met with surgeons who examined me and ordered up a barium enema, which showed a free ascending colon, and what appears to be a normal appendix, but. My colon is attached since birth, higher up than many other humans, and it can move. Now that I am getting older and falling apart, tee hee, it has more room to move. My appendix has been grumbling all this time, but the surgeons said that is due to the moving colon in my case. They recommend a lapro appendectomy/resection of the colon, or a lapro appendectomy/cecopexy, in which case they would remove the appendix and create a peritoneal flap and suture it to the colon to hold it in place. It has been a very painful and trying month for me I can tell you. They claim the two procedures done laparoscopically are tantamount to the equivalent of having a double appendectomy at once. It does require a week stay in the hospital for pain management and to insure the bowel is functioning, and 8-16 weeks of lifting nothing heavier than a gallon of milk. If i had not seen my mobile colon with my own eyes in the oh so clear barium enema imagery, I would have had to say ugh! So, at my choosing, hi ho, hi ho, it's off to surgery i go. Going to miss my clean abdomen. I guess i can say i was born with three navels if anyone asks. garbova |
